Since launching in 2012, Lyft has aggressively expanded its foothold in the mobility space. The company delivered its billionth ride in September 2018, spurring its reputation as a ridesharing VIP and household name.

Propelling Lyft’s massive growth is an efficient and user-friendly hiring and onboarding process, taking place entirely online. Requirements are slim and easily reachable; in fact, a driver can be earning money in an average of 20 days. Lyft’s well-oiled hiring and onboarding machine is just one reason longstanding taxi companies are wilting. While taxi apps like Curb have worked to combat Lyft’s rapid growth, they are too laser focused on customer acquisition versus driver satisfaction. Lyft’s modern, mobile friendly and cloud-based approach to HR allows them to quickly hire drivers as they expand into new markets.

The reality is that old-fashioned recruiting avenues are significantly hindering the recruitment of iconic yellow cab drivers in many major American cities. New York City, where taxis ruled until the rise of ridesharing, required cab drivers to pass an English test until 2016, and today they still must apply for a license, submit a mountain of paperwork including fingerprints, fulfill education requirements, and pay a $252 fee.[1]  If you take a standard applicant and present them with two hiring options: Lyft’s streamlined, modern process or a yellow cab company’s cumbersome, outdated version, there is little incentive to select the latter.

For many transportation organizations, years of legacy systems make it unlikely that all challenges can be entirely mitigated, but incorporating HR cloud technology will reduce hiring barriers, streamline processes, and usher in a new era of efficiencies for transportation-centric companies. With a cloud-based approach, organizations can focus on their bottom lines and move beyond the all-too-common hiring hurdles and frustrations.

It’s imperative that legacy transportation organizations must work to keep pace with disruptors like ridesharing providers such as Lyft. Utilizing HR cloud technology will make traditional employers more attractive to applicants, ensuring greater competition, health, and innovation throughout the industry.
